Phoenix Senior Living and Phoenix Development Group are proud to announce our internships for Summer 2021. This opportunity will provide our interns a way to learn more about the senior living industry from the ground up, while gaining real world work experience and developing their skills to follow their career paths. Jesse Marinko, Founder and CEO of Phoenix Senior Living, remarks, “It’s been a big effort and hot topic within our industry on how to attract young talent to learn more about our industry. The complexity of our industry and diversity is still very much an unknown.” He went on to add, “We are humbled that these young men and woman have chosen to learn just how special our industry is and explore it as a potential career path. Phoenix Senior Living and Phoenix Development Group are excited to be a part of their journey and growth.”
The following is a list of our Summer 2021 interns, along with their bios and their roles…
Michael Brookins – Originally from Tallahassee, Florida, Michael will soon be starting his senior year at Auburn University, and is expected to graduate in May 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Building Construction. During his time at Auburn, he participated in many extracurricular roles such as the Director of Videography for Auburn University’s Dance Marathon and a member of Design-Build Institute of America. Michael has had an interest in senior living after seeing his father construct and operate his own facility in Tallahassee, Florida and Dothan, Alabama. Michael is excited to be a part of the Phoenix Development team for the summer with hopes to see how his studies of construction intersect with the logistics of development. In his spare time, Michael enjoys photography, playing tennis, and being with family and friends during his time off from college.
Zach Marinko – This summer marks the third summer that Zach has interned with PSL/PDG. Throughout his internships, he has gained a side variety of work experience in many areas from providing assistance in the communities, conducting activities with the senior residents, preparing meals, and facility maintenance to working side by side with PDG development team , creating floor plans, and getting exposure to the ins and outs of the Phoenix development process. Before graduating from Pope High School, he played on the varsity basketball team and participated on the track and field team and won the Georgia high-jump state championship. He plans to start his freshman year at Auburn University this fall to study civil engineering and participate on the track and field team. Zach has lived in the Metro Atlanta area his whole life and loves to spend time doing outdoor activities such as biking, going to the lake, enjoying his youth with fewer responsibilities, and keeping up with sports.
Michael and Zach will be engaging in the many facets of development including feasibility analysis preparation, gathering market data, drawing review, permitting assistance, monthly development update assistance, job-site walks, and punch list carry out amongst many other roles. Each intern will have the ability to work alongside seasoned development managers in an effort to continue pushing forward on several pre-construction and under construction new build and renovation projects. PDGP’s goal for Michael and Zach is to broaden their knowledge through hands on experience in the fast-moving development world while also providing valuable assistance on the day-to-day aspects of the business.
Chris Garten – Chris is from Jacksonville, Florida and attended Florida State University where he received a B.S. in Social Science with a concentration in Economics. He is currently a joint degree student at Georgia State University’s College of Law and Robinson College of Business, and will receive his J.D. and M.S.H.A. in the spring of 2023. As a legal intern for Phoenix Senior Living, Chris provides assistance on a multitude of legal projects including reviewing and drafting contracts; drafting and negotiating real estate and financing instruments; drafting and implementing risk management policies and procedures; assisting with workflow and compliance responses from third party counsel, insurance companies, and vendors; and participating in counsel-executive strategy and work sessions.
Abby Peyton – Abby is a senior at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia, and is currently involved in the Lassiter Ambassador freshman mentoring program and the Math, Science, and National Honors Societies. She is also a co-captain of the Lassiter swim and dive team, and swims for the Stingrays club swim team. Abby plans on pursuing a degree in medicine, and has been working with our Clinical Support Specialists at various PSL communities. Abby has had the opportunity to observe the methods Phoenix uses to offer the best quality of care for our residents, including but not limited to resident assessments, med cart audits, and assisting caregivers with residents on their day-to-day needs.
